PC Engine Mini Announced With the First Games: Alien Crush, Ninja Spirit and R-Type

Konami announced at the E3 Los Angeles the “Mini” reissue of the PC Engine, the historic NEC and Hudson Soft console released in the late 1980s. The new mini console will be sold under the name of TurboGrafx-16 Mini in North America, PC Engine CoreGrafx Mini in Europe and PC Engine Mini in Japan.

The TurboGrafx-16 was launched for the first time in Japan in 1987, the result of a collaboration between NEC and Hudson Soft: the mini console will present the original design repurposed in a more compact version while the controller will keep the same dimensions as the original. The operating system will support various screen resolutions with graphics filters and saves at any point in the game. As for the latter, here are the first titles announced:

  • Ninja Spirit

PC Engine Mini (Japan)

  • Bonk

  • Super Star Soldier
  • Ys Book I & II

The Japanese version will also include Bonk, a 2D platformer featuring a sympathetic caveman child at the time of the PC Engine mascot, it is not clear whether this title will also be included in Europe and North America. Other games mentioned include Castlevania Rondo of Blood, Ninja Spirit, R-Type and YS Book 1 & 2. Release date and price of the Mini PC Engine were not disclosed.
