In the last few days, the web has been flooded with controversies concerning Cyberpunk 2077, the highly anticipated CD Projekt RED title realized in collaboration with Mike Pondsmith, designer of the role-playing game Cyberpunk 2020, on the alleged unjust representation of minorities present in the game.
The first controversy stems from an article in RockPaperShotgun, a preview of the game demo shown at E3. In the article, the author reports that he was a bit perplexed by the stereotypical representation of the minorities that make up two of the gangs present in the game, namely the Voodoo Boys and the Animals. From now on, the world of the internet has been unleashed.
First in the comments of the article (at some point closed because it became unmanageable) and then on Reddit, some users have come to bring up Mike Pondsmith, the author of the fantasy world to which the game is inspired, claiming that he is not actively participating in the project, and that he would never have allowed this supposed mystification of his thought, and of the (always alleged) incorrect treatment of minorities.
Mike Pondsmith himself intervened on this issue, and he clarified the question once and for all with a message on Reddit:
“If I were not heavily involved in the project, I could do a lot more things (I have a private life if I have a bad time.)
As for the Animals, the point of the situation is just that: they are people who believe they are dangerous and powerful wild animals. The very fact that the woman who controls them is called Sasquatch should be a clear clue. The Voodoo Boys, on the other hand, were created to make a specific and biting criticism of cultural appropriation. Practitioners of voodoo rites have come forward to regain their territory. Who does ** or do you think you are to tell me if what I create is right or not? “
Another message, also on Reddit, allowed Pondsmith to also clarify the question concerning the advertising message of a drink of the game, on which a transsexual with an evident erection is visible :
“What I am about to say will not repeat it further: I am tired of the respectable drivers who are trying to tell me with paternalistic tone in internet chats what I should feel offended because I am a black person. Do you want to be my friends? Thanksgiving lunch finds the courage to tell your ‘racist uncle Bob’ to shut up to give a signal of change. “
In short, the good Mike is certainly not one who sends her to say and, with his words, has definitely silenced all the controversies that are igniting the discussions on the game. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
We remind you that Cyberpunk 2077 will arrive in stores next April 16th, 2020. Among the editions on sale, there is also the splendid collector’s edition of Cyberpunk 2077 with a statue of V in motion inside. Did you know that a petition was launched to have a trophy dedicated to Keanu Reeves included in the game?
