After the presentation made on the occasion of E3 2019, which left many players banned due to the choice of keeping many monsters of the previous generations out of the Galar Region, the Game Freak leaders had the opportunity to explore different aspects of Pokémon Sword and Shield in numerous interviews.
Speaking with Metro.co.uk, director Shigeru Ohmori discussed the caution with which the team introduces major changes in the franchise: “When we try to introduce big changes in the series, we prefer to do it gradually. Every time we develop a new game we would like to change the formula and try new things, but if you do too much at one time you risk altering their identity, so we try to implement the news gradually, while at the same time trying to satisfy the requests of fans who want to try some ‘other”.
In introducing the Savage Lands, one of the main novelties of Pokémon Sword and Shield, in Game Freak they followed the aforementioned reasoning: “So yes, we can say that the Wild Lands is our answer to players who asked for an open area, and we will continue to create new things gradually, as we progress with the series “. The Wild Lands, for the uninitiated, are open areas that connect the various cities of the Galar Region, where players can meet Pokémon, participate in Dynamax battles and move the camera freely.
Ohmori then talked about the features that are removed from one chapter and the other, and those that come back: “Everything is driven by our desire to amaze players with new gameplay findings. We don’t always want to do the same thing every time, but to introduce a turning point or something like that. […] For example, in these games the bicycle will return, which had disappeared for a while. In Sun and Moon you could jump on Pokémon to move around, but for the Wild Lands, which are really big, we believe that we need a vehicle able to guarantee really fluid movements, so we brought the bicycle back into the series, and at the same time we have changed things so that it can go on the water without interruptions, and we have added some novelties that will make it seem a surprise “ .
What do you think about the vision of Game Freak? Do you believe that the team is proceeding on the right path? Pokémon Sword and Shield, remember, will be launched exclusively for Nintendo Switch on November 15th.
