Japan has recently experienced an important passage: the abdication of Emperor Akihito has, in fact, marked the end of the Heisei Era. Specularly, the ascent to the throne of his son Naruhito determined the beginning of the Reiwa Era.
The important socio-political event prompted the well-known Japanese magazine Famitsu to carry out a study dedicated to the videludic aspect of the Heisei Era. Several important industry personalities have therefore expressed their opinion on which game or series could deserve the title of the representative of this period of Japanese history.
Among the interviewees, we find two representatives of the sector decidedly exceptional: Yuji Horii, creator of Dragon Quest, and the CEO of the software house Level-5, Akihiro Hino. Both have expressed their authoritative opinion on the peculiar issue. The first has indicated the entire series The Legend of Zelda as particularly representative, but, in-depth, has indicated the greatest exponents in Ocarina of Time and, indeed, Breath of the Wild. The latter was also indicated as worthy of the title by the CEO of Level-5. However, Akihiro Hino also highlighted the role played by the entire Dragon Quest series, which, according to the professional, had a significant impact on the medium.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, therefore, in addition to the honor of Game of the Year 2017, can now also boast the peculiar title of “Game of the Heisei Era”!
