Pokemon Go: How to Defeat Team Rocket and Capture Shadow Pokemon

As announced by Niantic Labs, Team Rocket has invaded the world of Pokemon GO, allowing coaches to come across new Shadow Pokemon. In this mini-guide, we will explain how to defeat Team Rocket, how to capture Shadow Pokemon and how to purify the latter.

By defeating Team Rocket, Pokemon GO players will have the opportunity to capture the Shadow Pokemon used by the evil organization. After having caught them, it will also be possible to purify them obtaining various benefits. Below we explain in detail how these new mechanics work.

Where to meet and how to deal with Team Rocket

Team Rocket has invaded the world of Pokemon GO, taking control of some PokeStop. These buildings are recognizable by the presence of a large red R on the top (as you can see in the image at the bottom of the page) and are accessible only by coaches of level 8 or above. Entering the Pokèstop, a challenge will start against a recruit from Team Rocket, a 3v3 battle with the Premier Balls up for grabs to capture the new Shadow Pokemon.

How to catch Shadow Pokemon

After winning a battle against Team Rocket, you will be rewarded with experience points and the chance to capture one of the Shadow Pokemon that Team Rocket has left behind. To capture the Shadow Pokemon, each player is given a Premier Ball number, which can only be used during encounters with these creatures. The number of Premier Balls received is based on how many of your Pokemon have survived the battle, and on the rank of your medals achieved in purifying the Shadow Pokemon and defeating Team Rocket.

At first, you will get 5 Premier Balls by winning the battle without any of the Pokemon being defeated. Capturing Shadow Pokemon is similar to capturing Pokemon in Raids: you will have a limited number of specific Pokeballs available (in this case, Premier Balls), and you will have to rely on the help of berries to increase your chances of capture. Of course, the execution of curved and optimal shots will further increase your chances of success.

How to purify Shadow Pokemon: costs and benefits

Shadow Pokemon can be purified by using 2 Candies and 2,000 Star Dust for the following benefits. This process will bring the creatures to Level 25 and will increase the IV values of the Pokemon by 2 points. In addition, the purified little monsters will become stronger and will require a smaller amount of Candy and Star Dust to evolve and learn new moves. We point out that the Purified Pokemon can be recognized by the special icon and by the white aura that surrounds them.

Speaking of the new events available in Pokemon GO, remember that until July 29 there will be the possibility of capturing Pikachu with the Straw Hat.
