As noted by the attentive users of ResetEra, Bandai Namco Entertainment has recently registered a new trademark, called “Smash Tennis”, which would seem to be a preamble to the return of a historic sports series by the Japanese publisher.
We are obviously talking about Smash Court Tennis, a franchise launched in 1993 on Super Nintendo Entertainment System and stranded in 2008, the year in which the disappointing Smash Court Tennis 3 was released.
Although Bandai Namco has not released any official statement on the matter to date, it seems likely that the company is thinking of a possible revival of the tennis franchise. An announcement could even arrive during the upcoming new edition of GamesCom, which will be held in Cologne from 20 to 24 August. However, this is just speculation at the moment, we’ll see if the publisher actually has something concrete on the site for genre lovers, who at the moment have to settle for the uninspiring Tennis World Tour.
