Microsoft has officially made available the Preview 1908 Xbox One update for all users who have been part of the Beta Ring for at least 3 months and who have reached XP Level 5 as an Insider.
The update introduced yet another redesign of the dashboard and a feature much in demand by gamers, or the display of the remaining time for downloads. The update, in any case, was not limited to adding features, since it also permanently removed Cortana – the voice assistant also available on Microsoft devices – from the console.
The focus of the Redmond home has thus shifted from local device functions to cloud-based vocal experiences. This means that players with Xbox One will no longer be able to talk to Cortana through the headset, but will still be able to give voice commands using the Cortana Xbox Skill app on iOS, Android, Windows, and Harmon Kardon Invoke devices to turn on Xbox. One, adjust the volume, launch games, capture screenshots and more – just as it is possible to do with Alexa devices. Fortunately, as explained later by Harrison Hoffman, Kinect’s legacy commands will continue to be supported.
The Preview Update will be made available in the coming days also for Alpha Skip Ahead ring users, while the official publication will take place only after the end of the tests, scheduled for next autumn.
"Xbox, on" style commands, via the Kinect, are still supported.
