Derek Yu announced that Spelunky 2 ‘s launch window has been postponed. The game will no longer be released by 2019, as originally planned, in order to give the team more time to complete the development process.
“Hey, Spelunky fan! Unfortunately, I don’t think we’ll be able to release Spelunky 2 this year. Development is going well and we’re not far from the final goal, but the density and details we want to put into the game are taking longer than the expected. Thank you for your patience. ” reads Derek Yu’s tweet reported at the bottom of the news.
Announced surprisingly during Paris Games Week 2017, Spelunky 2 is presented as the sequel to the eponymous rogue-like created by Derek Yu, where players find themselves exploring ancient ruins in search of precious treasures. In the second episode of the saga, we will take control of the speleologist’s daughter, the protagonist of the original, facing even deeper and more demanding challenges.
Last August, almost a year after the announcement, the developers released the first Spelunky 2 gameplay trailer, allowing us to finally see the actual game in action. The original launch window was set for 2019, but in the end, Derek Yu and his team decided to postpone it to complete the development process.
At this point, all that remains is to wait for updates on the Spelunky 2 launch window.
Hey, Spelunky fans! Unfortunately, I don't think we're going to get to release Spelunky 2 this year. Development is still going well and we're not far off target, but the density and detail of the game is demanding more time.
