Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the acquisition of Insomniac Games, a studio that has always been strongly linked to the PlayStation brand and a long-time partner of Sony Computer Entertainment.
Insomniac Games has developed over the years franchises and successful games such as Marvel’s Spider-Man, Ratchet & Clank, the original Spyro trilogy (recently remastered, whose rights are held by Activision Blizzard), Resistance, Resistance 2, Resistance 3, Sunset Overdrive , Song of the Deep, Edge of Nowhere and many others.
It is not clear at the moment whether Sony has also taken possession of any assets and IPs owned by Insomniac Games, even if this appears to be the most likely hypothesis. The great success of Marvel’s Spider-Man has certainly played a leading role in this acquisition, released in September last year, the Spiderman game has sold over thirteen million copies worldwide to date, becoming one of the best-selling titles of 2018 in North America and Europe.
Insomniac Games will thus become the fourteenth studio owned by Sony Interactive Entertainment, the company will work on new projects for PlayStation 4 and of course PS5, however, the two companies have not yet announced any definite plans or plans regarding the future. The mind inevitably runs to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for PS5 and to the possible re-launch of franchises like Resistance and Ratchet & Clank.
