Interviewed by Eurogamer.net on the occasion of Gamescom, CD Projekt’s Concept Artist RED Marthe Jonkers said that Cyberpunk 2077 may never receive multiplayer support, despite this being in the works at the Polish company.
“On CD Projekt RED a team of about 40 people is working on the Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer but it is not said that multiplayer will actually be added to the game. It is a research and development phase, for now, we are focused on the single player experience Everything must be in the right place … it is not easy to insert multiplayer in a game like that, we would never do anything that is not at least in line with the standards of The Witcher 3. We will try to study multiplayer again, but we are not sure about inserting it, the multiplayer mechanics may not fit into Cyberpunk. “
Jonkers then reiterates how currently around 400 employees of the firm are working on Cyberpunk 2077, a much larger team (about twice the size) compared to The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt team. The new CD Projekt RED game is expected on April 16, 2020, on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Google Stadia, support for the latter platform was announced on Monday at Gamescom.
