After being one of the big names that were hidden behind the star product of Disney+ (‘The Mandalorian’), the filmmaker, screenwriter and actor Taika Waititi has been united Netflix to develop two new animated series that will bring you back to Willy Wonka, Charlie Bucket and company.
Based on the works of ‘Charlie and the chocolate factory’, Waititi, and the streaming platform are planning to create a show about the world of the factory and another about the Oompa-Loompas, who work for the great magnate of the candy that in its day played Johnny Depp. In addition, the director of ‘Jojo Rabbit’ will write, produce and direct both series.
“The programs will retain the spirit and the tone for the excellence of the original story, while developing for the first time, the world and the characters much beyond the pages of the book of Dahl”announced the streaming platform. At the same time, it is confirmed that Netflix is also planning to adapt other stories Dahl as ‘Matilda’ or ‘My friend the giant’.
“Find the creative partner suitable to give life to Willy Wonka, Charlie and the Oompa-Loompas in animation was a daunting task… until Taika entered the scene”said Melissa Cobb, vice president of original animation on Netflix. “Then, it was really obvious. If Dahl had created the character of a filmmaker to adapt his work, I’m pretty sure that would have created at Taika“.
Also Gideon Simeloff (company director Roald Dahl) wanted to declare how happy they are with this great signing: “In the words of Willy Wonka: We are delighted! I filled with joy!’ with the union of Taika to this project. There is something undoubtedly Wonka in the creative talent of Taika and his inimitable sense of humor and we can’t think of anyone more suitable to lead the charge creatively in these first shows, with the quality and features of Netflix”.
