Europe is the new epicenter of the coronavirus and the governments of many countries have implemented measures to contain the contagion. France has limited the crowds of people to groups of less than 100, we call on the population to stay at home and have closed movie theaters, restaurants and shops. But, it seems that the Cannes film Festival still has hopes of being able to be held.
According to THR, Cannes has announced that it will take no decision on the festival until mid-April. On April 16, she had planned to announce their program. The date for the celebration of the festival is from 12 to 23 may. Despite this statement, the magazine Le Point confirmed the most secure cancellation.
This half French quotes an anonymous member of the organization of the festival. “It will be very difficult, not to say impossibleselect films from China, Korea, Iran, or Italy, and about fifty countries, knowing that the cast and the directors can’t move“said this source. With respect to the restriction of the number of people gathered in a same place also explained the impossibility: “To project movies in the na hall of 2000 seats (the grand auditorium Louis-Lumière account with 2300 seats) will not be authorized and the minimum alert worry to festival-goers”.
In response to this journal, the organization of Cannes insists on denying his cancellation: “Despite the sensational headlines, there are no new elements regarding to the Cannes film Festival. The event, which should take place from 12 to 23 may, is studying with care and clarity the evolution of national and international situationin cooperation with the city of Cannes and the National Center of Cinema (CNC). When the time comes, around mid-April, they will make the necessary decision together”says the statement sent to THR.
If it is finally cancelled, it would be the first time in its 73-year history that is not celebrated the Festival of Cannes. Only once it has been interrupted. In 1968, a time that has already been started, the festival was canceled because of the demonstrations work, and students that were produced in the whole of France.
Or Spike Lee, or anyone
