Between the 5 platforms naval cientficas most modern in the world for its characteristics of autonomous and maneuverability, along with its equipment tecnolgico pointer to perform research oceanogrfica and hidrogrfica high level, the Cape Horn is a key tool in the management, control and administration of the living resources in the Zone, Economic Exclusive of Chile.
On April 2, 2013, at site 2, molo 500 in Talcahuano, it did incorporacin to the list of units in service of the Chilean Navy, the AGS-61 “Cabo de Hornos”, materializndose as the project “Medusa” that is inici in the year 2007. This project marc a milestone in building the navy, as by the first time construy in Chile a Unit under a new concept of research multipropsito, ensuring the availability of the vessel at least 250 days of the year and posicionndose in one of the most advanced of its kind in the world.
Characteristics Technical Characteristics
Built entirely in the Shipyard and Maestrazas of the Armada (ASMAR), the “Cape of Ovens” has of 74.1 metres long and 15.6 metres wide, has a displacement capacity of 3,200 tons and a autonoma de 35 das, this equates to a capacity of navegacin 6,300 miles nuticas without replenishment, your dotacin est composed of 9 Officers and 34 Sailors, plus have the ability to carry 25 scientists on board.
This allows you to operate in a manner optimal to work in fields of research oceanogrfica, fisheries and hidrogrfica ocenica; recovery, mantencin and mooring of buoys oceanogrficas and meteorolgicas; location of submerged objects, as well as rescue and salvage of submarines wrecked. Besides, it is planned to laboratories and halls sensors acoustic, frigorficos of 10 and 40 square feet for samples, gras telescpicas of up to 12 tonnes, among others. The results obtained in their commissions, for example, go to the main institutes and Undersecretary of Fisheries, Energy and Economy, where major decisions are made as it is to designate the dates of closure and also to foresee as being the climatologa in the national area for the next year.
The “Cape of Ovens” participation, between February 19 and march 13 of this year, in support of the search of the Hercules KC-130R of the Force Area of Chile disappeared in the sea of Drake and is currently next to set sail to Talcahuano to a period of intermediate dikes between April and July, and then resume their tasks.
