TOKYO (AP).- The olympic flame of the Olympic Games in Tokyo was withdrawn from public display in Japan. And it is not clear when it will reappear, nor where or in what circumstances. All a mystery, that is generated by the pandemic of the coronavirus.

The flame arrived in Japan from Greece on the 26th of march last, after a bleak ceremony organised in Athens a week before. After the Tokyo Olympics and the torch relay is postergaran for the coming year, the element was exposed in the prefecture, northeast of Fukushima.

I was going to be there until the end of April, but was withdrawn in just a few days after the japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe, declared on Tuesday the state of emergency to fight against the coronavirus, which includes measures such as limiting the size of the crowds.

“Tokyo 2020 will maintain the flame in an undisclosed location to avoid people congregate”, said the organizers in a press release. It is expected that the organization of the Tokyo 2020 keep the flame in the short-term. In the long, it is intended to be used by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a promotion and a symbol of the fight against the pandemic.

“The idea will be to keep this flame burning and show it to the world,” explained Michael Payne, former director of marketing for the IOC, to the AP in a recent interview. It is expected that the flame coming back in next year in Japan for the torch relay, but Payne suggested that the flame has a goal more encompassing: “Keep the flame burning and will provide a powerful inspiration, a bright light while the world goes by in these difficult times,” he said.

Bad history: protests and violence

Prior to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the organizers in China and the IOC organized a relay that made the calls in almost 20 countries. The world tour was met with violent protests against China on the human rights situation in Tibet and other parts. The flame was the focus of protests in several cities, including London, Paris and San Francisco. This meant that the organizers changed the route to avoid crossings between protesters against it, and that cheered him.

The then president of the IOC Jacques Rogge he described the chaos as a “crisis”. From this, the IOC gave up the whole plan in the future to ride the flame in the world. The fact of being able to display the calls in the next year on a world tour, and even in Japan, will depend on the evolution of the virus. The same is true with staging the Olympic Games before the crowds within about 16 months.
