The health authorities in Chile reported this Wednesday, 430 new cases of coronavirus, the highest figure recorded until now in a day, bringing the infection total to 5.546, and indicated that the deceased amounted to 48, after confirming five new deaths from COVID-19.
The number of contagions daily was maintained between 300 and 400 in the last few weeks, being this Wednesday, the largest number of new cases reported since it was recorded the first case of coronavirus in the country, southern the 3 march.
Despite this, the undersecretary of Networks of Care, Arturo Zúñiga, was positive about the trend: “The figures are positive as it indicates that the cases have doubled every 11 days, so that you can have one curve is ‘flattened’,” he said this Wednesday during a press conference daily.
The last five people who have died, explained the under-secretary, were older than 70 years, one of them in the region of The Araucanía, the other of Magellan, a third in the coastal region of Valparaiso, and two in the Metropolitan Region, in which are 46 % of the infected.
Zúñiga explained that the number of recovered exceeds the thousand, which represents about 20 % of the total number of confirmed cases, accounting for those patients who are discharged after 14 days of admission and which are considered as “not contagiantes”.
The health authorities made it clear that between public and private resources, there is a 63 % occupancy of beds in intensive care units, which implies that still there are 575 vacancies for new patients.
ADDITIONAL MEASURES FOR HOLY WEEK
The traditional celebration of Holy Week, which runs from this Thursday until Sunday night, and during which many chileans are moving to coastal areas or rural, is of special concern to the health authorities, who have established additional measures of control.
“I want to remember that for the Holy Week have been implemented laced health, and it is important to reiterate that all individuals remain in their homes and do not transit to a second housing,” said undersecretary of Public Health, Paula Daza.
The lace-up toilets, prohibiting the exit and entry of people, except in situations of emergency, isolate the entire Metropolitan Region -which houses the capital; the urban enclave of Grand Conception, in the center-south of the country, and in two communes of the region of The Araucanía.
Chile is under the state of exception by catastrophe, with curfew nationwide from 22.00 hours to 5.00 hours the following day, with classes suspended until may and with the boundaries, shopping centers, cinemas, restaurants and retail shops that are not of first necessity closed.
The Government has ruled out ordering the mandatory quarantine on the entire territory, as had been done by other neighboring countries with the least cases such as Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia and Peru, and is inclined of time for a “quarantine” phase-out”, that depends on the numbers of infections.
The evolution of epidemiological favorable in six counties (districts) that were in quarantine in Santiago de Chile, has led the Government to lift the restrictive measure from the Monday of all three of them, and partially in two.
On the contrary, the mandatory quarantine is maintained in several areas such as the region of The Araucanía, with three communes in mandatory quarantine and in several municipalities such as the city of Chillán, Osorno or Temuco, affecting almost two million people of a total population of 18.
