Joe Exotic with a tiger

Netflix
The miniseries Tiger King focuses on the rivalry between Joe Exotic (in the picture) and Carole Baskin.

Excessive. Crazy. Addictive.

There is No lack of adjectives hyperbolic to describe Tiger King, the mini-series from Netflix that has become a phenomenon in this era of confinement and overall.

The documentary of seven episodes, whose full title is Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness (“King Tiger: murder, mayhem and madness”), is on track to unseat Stranger Things as the most successful of the platform.

The series focuses on the stark rivalry between the merchant of big cats Joe Exotic, also known as the Tiger King, and the owner of a reserve for these animals Carole Baskin.

But it goes far beyond.

Notice: from here on, this note may reveal details of the plot.

Who is Joe Exotic?

Joseph Maldonado-Passage is a breeder of big cats that until a few years ago owned and ran an exotic animal park in Wynnewood, Oklahoma.

Netflix
Joe Exotic flirted with politics and was independent candidate for governor of Oklahoma in 2018.

With shirts of bright colours, a peculiar cut of hair, and his inclination towards provocation and exhibitionism, Joe Exotic is presented before our eyes as an eccentric character who calls himself as “a provincial gay lover of the big cats”.

We see him lead a quiet truck with a huge tiger in the passenger seat, sing songs of country music, participate in a reality show produced by himself or to marry two men at once in a ceremony filled with guests.

The other main character of the series is his eternal enemy, Carole Baskin, owner of Big Cat Rescue, a sanctuary for big cats located in Tampa, Florida, from whom we also know lights, shadows, and rarities throughout the documentary.

Carole Baskin runs the reserve, Big Cat Rescue, in Tampa, Florida.

The major dispute between them ended with Joe Exotic in prison, where he is serving a sentence of 22 years for crimes that include attempted to hire someone to kill Baskin and other crimes related to endangered species and conservation.

A complete madness

Up here, you might think that the series is a simple story of the confrontation between two people who move in the same business and, therefore, are competitors.

A business that shines a revealing figure: in the united States there are a few To 7,000 tigers in captivitywhile only 4,000 copies live in freedom throughout the world.

But the success of the documentary lies in the plot twists, the surprises that lurk in every episode, in the succession of respondents to what more strange that they leave in the spectator a sense of disbelief and curiosity to know what happens after.

Netflix
Jeff Lowe appeared as the investor who would help Joe Exotic to save his animal park and ended up staying with the business.

So, mixed animal spectacles with fire-intentioned, alliances that turn into betrayal, a disappearance, unresolved, parks that seem to be sects, polygamous relationships, illegal transactions of big cats and exotic animals, and undercover investigations of the federal government of the united States.

There is No rest in this work that combines the bizarre with comedy and, at times, embarrassing for others, and discomfort, while also leaving a sediment of sadness for the fate of its main protagonists: the big cats.

Disappointment with the result

Several of the people involved in the series have protested the final result that appears on the screens.

It is the case of Mahamayavi Bhagavan “Doc” Antle, the owner of a safari of big cats in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, which contends that when he agreed to collaborate on the series did so believing that it was going to be a documentary on his work in defense of these animals.

Netflix
Another of the owners of a park of big cats is Doc Antle, who has collaborated with Hollywood in several films of animals.

Ignored, he says, that were going to appear the details more morbid style of life, which he shares with several women that seems to control as if it were the leader of a sect.

But without doubt, the most upset with the producers of Netflix is the own Carole Baskin, despite the fact that you voluntarily participate in individual interviews and with your current husband, Howard Baskin.

“Without respect for the truth”

The problem is that the documentary will focus on the case of the previous husband of Baskin, Don Lewis, who mysteriously disappeared in August of 1997.

Some of the people who appear in the miniseries accused Baskin of having murdered. There are even those who denounce the woman gave him the remains of the carcass to the cats, or dissolved in acid.

In the united States there are between 5,000 and 10,000 tigers in captivity. Throughout the world there are only 4,000 of these animals in freedom in their natural habitat.

In a long publication shared on social networks, Baskin writes: “The series has a segment dedicated to suggest, with lies and innuendo of people who are not credible, that I had a role in the disappearance of my husband, Don 21 years ago”.

“The series presents this without any respect to the truth or in most cases without giving me a chance to refute the absurd accusations prior to its publication”.

“The despicable lies work best to get audience”.

Netflix told the BBC that he has nothing to say at this time.

One of the many people that commented on the series on social networks, it was Kim Kardashian West, who asked her 64 million followers if they believe that Baskin killed her husband.

Baskin it has never been formally charged in connection with the disappearance of Don Lewis.

However, with the success of the mini series of Netflix, the sheriff’s office leading the investigation has announced that it is open to new information,

On the other hand, the name Joe Exotic came to your own daily briefing that the president of the united states, Donald Trumpoffers on the coronavirus.

Before the question of a reporter about whether he would consider granting a presidential pardon to the king of the tigers, Trump replied in jest: “What I will study”.
