UNAM disclaims guide for cases of serious patients with COVID-19

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) cut them off of the Guide Bioethics released by the General Health Council in Mexico, which include scientific guidelines and ethical with serious cases of COVID-19.

Recommendations to determine which patient will be subject to the resources of the health sector are available, such as if you have another disease or if it is younger, as well as a series of rules for the family members of these patients to appeal to medical decisions.

In the document published by the Council, they appear as editors dr. Maria de Jesus Medina Arellano, a researcher at the Institute of Legal Research of the UNAM and member of the ethics committee of the General Health Council.

The assistant secretary for Health federal, Hugo López-Gatell, said at the conference Monday that the guide “is a document that is available here, in this portal of the General Health Council”, though “not to imply at this point an executive decision about procedures that have to be implemented”.

The UNAM is cut them off, explaining that the rector of the institution was not convened to analyze the document, as dictated by the General Health Law.

This weekend, the General Health Council made public a document entitled a Guide to Bioethics Allocation of Resources Medicine-Critical, by which establishes the provisions that will guide the decisions of the medical personnel in the event that the health system will see overwhelmed by the pandemic of the Covid-19.

In this regard, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) considers it important to make the following precision:

1.- In accordance with the provisions of articles 15 of the General Law of Health and third of the Rules of procedure of the Council itself, corresponds to the National University, specifically the president, one of the seats for the members.

2.- Neither UNAM nor its rector, dr. Enrique Graue Wiechers, have been summoned to a plenary session for the analysis, discussion and eventual approval of such a Guide.

Therefore, the National University is not responsible for the terms and the content of the referred document.
