Boxing is one of the sports that best reflects the metaphor of feelings that can be life. Good times and bad, success and depression, or glory and fall are just a few of the opposite ends, which can explain the nobility of a sport that not only develops into a quadrilateral.
The seventh art has not been aware of boxing and throughout history, many films have had as the central axis of his argument through the life of its protagonists. This is a review of some of the tape most famous.
1 – charlie chaplin, boxing champion (THE CHAMPION. Charles Chaplin. 1915)
Charles Chaplin, in his character of charlie chaplin, starred in this comedy in black and white just 33 minutes, divided into three acts, which is the first tape that bases its plot on the boxing story line.
Chaplin finds a horseshoe of luck outside of a gym, and decides to try his luck in the ring in what represents a challenge that we will face the champion Bob Uppercut.
2 – The idol of clay (CHAMPION. Mark Robson. 1949)
Kirk Douglas, in one of his first leading roles, gives life to Midge Kelly, a young man on the way to California along with his brother known boxer Johnny Dunne. After a series of events, including the wedding girl, Midge becomes a professional boxer and world champion. By the way, your life is falling apart, abandoning his partner and breaks family ties.
The film had six academy award nominations, including Kirk Douglas for Best Actor, although it only won in the section of Photography.
3 – More harder the fall (The Harder They Fall. Mark Robson. 1956)
Mark Robson, who had already directed ‘The Idol of iron’, directs this film starring Humphrey Bogart (Eddie), who plays a sports journalist who is required by a friend of his to promote a boxer from argentina named Toro Moreno.
Eddie accepts the job in exchange of a money of the victories of Toro Moreno, pre-rigged for you to win the battles and become the world champion of the heavy weights.
The tape is remembered for being the last film of Humphrey Bogart before his death in 1957 from cancer of the esophagus.
4 – Marked by hatred (Somebody Up There Likes Me. Robert Wise. 1956)
Paul Newman stars in this film that brings to life Rocky Graziano, a young italo-american who, after passing through the prison and escape from the army, becomes a necessity in the boxer, reaching the top.
This film marked the first major success in the career of Paul Newman, who got a role which also chose Steve McQueen and James Dean, who died a few months before the shooting.
5 Rocky (John G. Avildsen. 1976)
One of the most famous movies in cinema history. Written by and starring Sylvester Stallone, the tape chronicles the life of Rocky Balboa, a boxer unknown that becomes known to fight for a world championship of heavy weights that lost the points against his rival, Apollo. In between, there is also the story of love that feels Rocky by Adriana (Talia Shire).
The film was nominated for ten academy awards and won three (Best Film, Best editing and Best Director). After she came in the following years, other seven sequels, the last in 2018.
6 – Toro Salvaje (RAGING BULL. Martin Scorsese. 1980)
Jake la Motta is a young boxer who dreams of becoming a world champion, but has a problem, is paranoid and discharge your aggressiveness both inside and outside of the ring. To achieve success, your life becomes a nightmare for the marriage problems, the nights out and the relationship with the mafia.
The movie had a lot of success thanks to the talent of the duo formed by the director Martin Scorsese and actor Robert De Niro, who won the Oscar and the Golden Globe for Best Actor. The tape was nominated for eight Oscars and won two, also the Best Mount.
7 Hurricane Carter (THE HURRICANE. Norman Jewison. 1999)
Denzel Washington won the Golden Globe and was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for to get into the skin of Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter, a boxer black that overcomes his difficult youth and becomes a contender for the title of middleweight.
Their dreams of success are thwarted in 1966 when he is accused of a triple murder at a bar in New Jersey. After a trial with many irregularities, he was sentenced to three life sentences.
The film is based on a true story, which made famous a song of Bob Dylan, in 1975, inside of his album Desire.
8 Million Dollar Baby (Clint Eastwood). 2004)
Clint Eastwood directed this movie, full of author, who also starred, produced and composed its soundtrack. Won four Oscars and garnered more than forty awards at international level.
The film tells the story of Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank), a waitress who dreams of becoming a boxer professional and trains at the gym where he works, Eddie Dupris (Morgan Freeman). The owner, Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood), in the beginning you do not see with good eyes the presence of the girl, but in the end just trusting in it.
9 Cinderella Man (Ron Howard. 2005)
The film is inspired by the life of the champion of the world boxing heavyweight James J. Braddock (Russell Crowe), who suffers the economic crisis of 1929 and lost his fortune in bad investments. After, he returns to the boxing, although his wife (Renée Zellweger) is opposed to and comes back to fight for the title.
The film was nominated for three Oscars, two Golden Globes and a Bafta.
10 The fighter (David O. Russell. 2010)
David O. Russell directed this film about the life of Dicky Eklund, a boxer troubled a lot of talent that you try to redeem himself by coaching his younger brother. Despite his powerful left hook, it always ends up defeated. After a fight that should never have held, Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) decides to follow the advice of your girlfriend and stay away from his family.
The film was nominated for seven Oscars, of which Christian Bale won the Best supporting Actor and Melissa Leo for Best supporting Actress.
In Spain, the boxing has also been a recurring theme in several films. Two of the most famous are two comedies that were very successful in their day. The tiger of Chamberí (1957), starring José Luis Ozores and Tony Leblanc, and the parody I did a Roque III (1980), of the couple formed by Andrés Pajares and Fernando Extended.
