The Rolling Stones launched this Thursday, their first original song since 2012: a simple, eloquent in the midst of the pandemic titled “Living in a Ghost Town” (“Living in a ghost town”).
“The Stones were in the studio recording new material before the running of the bulls, and we think that’s a song, ‘Living In A Ghost Town’, resounded in these times in which we live”, wrote on Twitter Mick Jagger, in a surprise presentation.
In dialog with Apple Music, Jagger said that he and Keith Richards wrote the song over a year ago, but that felt appropriate for the days running. “Was not written for this time, but it gave one of those strange things,” he said in allusion to the situation the world currently.
The song refers to “being in a place full of life but who are now deprived of life, so to speak… I Was playing the guitar and I wrote it very fast, in 10 minutes,” he recounted.
Before the launch of the theme song, Jagger adapted part of the letter to the current time. “Part of this was not going to work, and part of it was a bit odd and too dark,” he said. “So I rewrote it a little. I didn’t have to write much, to be honest. It’s pretty much the same as I did in the beginning”.
The singer of 76-year-old describes the chaos, the destruction and the apparent infinite loneliness of isolation. “Life was so beautiful / Then we all locked ourselves up”, sings Jagger. “Please, let this end / trapped in a world without end”.
Richards commented to Apple Music the song was recorded in 2019 in a study of Los Angeles, and recently returned on it to launch it.
“It’s a bit unsettling when (the song) suddenly comes back to life,” he said, and added that the pandemic was the appropriate time to launch the theme.
The iconic british rockers went on tour a good part of the last two decades, but the coronavirus stopped their plans of 15 concerts in North America since may 8.
“Living in a Ghost Town” is the first original work of the Stones since “Doom and Gloom” and “One More Shot”,, 2012, included in the greatest hits album “GRRR!”.
The band has not released an original album since “A Bigger Bang” in 2005, but its members say they have worked on a new selection in the last few years.
Over the weekend, the Stones were dressed with “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” in a marathon concert virtual organized by the international organization Global Citizen, with the collaboration of Lady Gaga.
