Miami, 11 may (EFE).- The singer-songwriter american Betty Wright, considered one of the queens of soul music, died at age 66, months after being diagnosed with cancer.
Depending on the employer record’s Steve Greenberg of S-Curve Records, who was close to the artist, Wright died at his home in Miami (USA) this Sunday, leaving four sons and an equal number of brothers and sisters.
Wright became one of the most prominent figures of the african-american music of the 70’s, when in 1971 broke into the market with its theme “Clean Up Woman”, which combined elements of funk, soul and R&B.
I was barely 17 years old when the song came to the list of the 10 most played songs in the united States, both on the billboards Billboard genres pop and R&B.
The recognized subject is used today as part of other compositions with the technique known as “sampling”, which consists in putting pieces of songs famous within the other, mainly within the genre of urban. An example is “Real Love”, Mary J. Blige, in which P. Diddy, acting as a producer, he put in a stretch of “Clean Up Woman”.
Although the singer didn’t have a success of that magnitude, Wright, whose legal name was Bessie Regina Norris, continued to work and managed to position other 20 songs among the most-listened to on the billboard R&B.
Wright was also one of the first pop stars to sing in the very high registers that have made it famous to Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande, among others.
In addition, he composed and arranged some of the successes of artists as diverse as Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, Stephen Stills, David Byrne, Alice Cooper, Jennifer Lopez, Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine, and Erykah Badu, among others.
Wright, considered a pioneer in opening up new spaces for women in the music industry, was the first female artist to achieve a gold album with his own record label, with the theme “No Pain, No Gain”, which he composed, sang and posted with your company’s Ms. B Records. EFE
