What are neurons?

Neurons are the basic cell of the nervous system. It is estimated that in our brain there are around 86 billion neurons, as indicated the National Council of Science and Technology of Mexico (Conacyt)

These cells produce electrical signals called ‘action potentials’, which transmits information to the nervous system and triggers certain actions.

For example, if you test a coffee very hot, the sensory neurons tell the nervous system that you are testing has a very high temperatures.

Another type of neurons are the so-called ‘motor’, which pass to the muscle of the tongue, the message that you must stop the contact with the liquid.

Also are the interneurons, which receive and transmit information to other types of neurons.

And thanks to a study, the scientists discovered that there are neurons focused to react to a specific person, which shows how fascinating the brain is.

The research it was conducted by scientists at the California Institute of Technology, who has sought evidence that the brain uses a reduced number of cells to decode an image constructed in our mind.

It reached this result thanks to the participation of people with epilepsy, who offered as volunteers. To them were implanted with a device to control the activity of brain cells, as part of their treatment. At the same time, they showed 2,000 different photographs.

And thanks to this instrument, it was discovered that there are specific cells located within the medial temporal lobe that are involved in aspects of sophisticated visual processing at the time of identifying a person.

This finding is named as “the neuron of Jennifer Aniston”, since it was found that a certain cell is activated strongly when participants were exposed to the image of the actress, but that same neuron would not respond to another stimulus.

This means that brain cells can be linked directly to a specific concept, and not only happens with the famous, also with the people close to us.

It means that each friend or family member has a neuron specialized within the brain. In addition, it passes the same process to recognize places that we already know.
