On World Oceans Day and edition 2020

Since its creation in 2008, UNWOD -for its acronym in English – has been celebrating the ocean and its importance to the planet and our lives, the time that creates awareness about the many threats it faces. As the challenges for the ocean continue to grow, the more urgent does the need for innovative solutions and the people who drive it.

To this end, the subject of UNWOD 2020 is Innovation for an ocean sustainable. Innovation, related to the introduction of new methods, ideas or products, it is a dynamic term, and fundamentally full of hope. The event will touch topics about the innovations from all over the world in areas of need and will provide a platform to thought leaders from diverse backgrounds, that are paving new roads for the health of our ocean and our planet in general.

The day will begin with the opening comments of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, followed by messages of the President of the General Assembly and Cara Delevingne. The sessions featured throughout the day will include a general overview of the state of our oceans by Bill McKibben, a presentation by Paul Hawken, a conversation multi-generational between Jean-Michel Cousteau, Celine Cousteau and Fabien Cousteau, and a panel discussion with a wide range of voices. including Tom Szaky, founder of Terracycle, and the youth activist Lilly Platt.

The programming will also feature a segment of “Solutions outstanding” during which you will present business solutions to problems from the ocean ranging from Bubble Barrier, which addresses plastic pollution until Finless Food, which creates bluefin tuna cultivated in the laboratory. Also we will announce the winners of the Seventh Annual Photo Contest of the United Nations.

The annual event of World Oceans Day the United Nations marks the start of the “Week of the World’s Oceans” to be held from 1 to June 14, during which it will develop further events organised by platform members are Friends of the World Oceans Day, the UN and other enthusiasts that are also revolving around the theme of innovation.
