Real Madrid takes revenge, destroys Sheriff and advances to the round of 16

Acting away from home, Real Madrid did not suffer any scares and beat Sheriff by 3-0 in the 5th round of Group D of the Champions League. The result puts Carlo Ancelotti’s team in the round of 16 and, in addition, destroys the Moldovan club’s chance to stay alive in the tournament.

The score also served as a “revenge” by the Spaniards, who were defeated in the 2nd round by the Eastern European team by 2-1, in a duel that took place at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Now, Real has reached 12 points and will face an “almost” protocol match in the last round against Inter Milan, which is also classified in the knockout phase. The game, however, is worth the 1st position in the bracket – the Italians have ten points.

spanish trampling

Without discomfort in front of the Moldovan fans, the Spaniards controlled the game and had their first chance to score after seven minutes. Modric, with freedom, launched in depth for Rodrygo, who fired from the right and tried to find Benzema already inside the area. The ball, however, was removed by the defense.

Two minutes later, the Frenchman himself hit the goal defended by the Greek Athanasiadis, but held back the celebration.

That’s because, after a kick from outside Kroos’ area, the goalkeeper put it into the middle of the area and the forward, on the rebound, finished it off for the goal. The bid, however, was invalidated by Benzema’s offside.

From insisting so much…

… Real opened the scoreboard in the 30th minute. In a foul taken a few steps from the penalty area, Alaba hit and had the luck to score, as the ball deflected into the opposing barrier and took away any chance of defending the opponent’s goalkeeper: 1-0.

Without the strength to pressure the rival, the Moldovan team conceded the second goal already in the additions of the initial stage. After quick triangulations, Rodrygo fired on Kroos, who finished masterfully at Athanasiadis’ angle. The ball still hit the crossbar but bounced off the goal.

No boots, so what!?

A curious moment marked the final minutes of the 1st half. Brazilian Rodrygo lost his right boot after a split with Castañeda on the right edge of Real’s attack.

Without worrying about urgently recovering the accessory, the young man continued the play barefoot with the aim of stealing the ball. The Sheriff, however, managed to free himself from danger.

attack against defense

Differently, the beginning of the 2nd half had only the inversion of the teams’ side of the field – Real Madrid also reached the 3rd goal with ease.

In the play, Mendy received it from the left and led the ball through the middle, already in the region of the entrance to the area. Under pressure, he called Benzema, who dislocated the goalkeeper and expanded the score.

Almost the goal of honor…

The Sheriff managed to scare Courtois’ goal in two consecutive opportunities. At 22, Traoré took a risk from outside the area and forced the Belgian to practice excellent defense.

In the next move, Yansane took advantage of the throw and headed the ball into Real’s goalpost, driving the local fans crazy.

What was left for the match were a few shots from the visitors saved by Athanasiadis, who avoided a rout.
