Where are the champions with Palmeiras in 2020?

Palmeiras will face Flamengo, this Saturday, at the Centenário stadium, in Montevideo, capital of Uruguay, in search of the third Copa Libertadores da América title in its history.

Alviverde fans still remember very well the club’s last continental achievement. After all, it’s only been ten months since the team commanded by Abel Ferreira defeated Santos 1-0 and became the 2020 South American champion.

With so little time between the last decision and the next, the Palmeira base that should go into the field next weekend to measure forces against the current two-time Brazilian champions remains the same as the most recent title.

Of the 15 players who participated in the final against Santos (the 11 starting line-up and another four who left the bench), no less than 13 are still wearing the Alviverde uniform. Oh, and the coach remains the same too.

But it is clear that some of the athletes who participated in the victorious campaign left Allianz Parque and are no longer accompanied by the fans.

With that in mind, the “Blog do Rafael Reis” presents below the current whereabouts of the champions of the Libertadores-2020 for Palmeiras who will not have the opportunity to fight for the second championship.

MATÍAS VIÑA (24 years old, Rome-ITA): Absolute titleholder of the left side of Palmeira last year, played in the 90 minutes of the decision and participated in the first matches of this season. Viña was traded with Roma for 13 million euros (R$ 82.6 million) in the last transfer window. In the Italian capital, the Uruguayan has already arrived as a starter and had a very promising start. However, he suffered a muscle injury at the end of last month and was no longer used by coach José Mourinho.

ALAN EMPEREUR (27 years old, Cuiabá): The defender arrived at Palmeiras along with Abel Ferreira and was widely used by the coach in the decisive straight of the Libertadores. In the title game, he started on the bench and was fired in the final minutes to help hold the result. In June, when his loan ended, he was returned to Hellas Verona. But the Italian club didn’t make much of a point of having him in its squad and released him to transfer to Cuiabá for free. Alan Empereur has been the start of the Mato Grosso team and consolidated his name on the national scene.

LUCAS LIMA (31 years old, Fortaleza): Hired from Santos in 2018 with the status of a player capable of defending the Brazilian team, the guard spent three years in a relationship of (little) love and (much) hate with the fans. Much pressured for almost never presenting the football that was expected of him, Lucas Lima was loaned in August to Fortaleza. In Ceará, he has not been brilliant as in other moments of his career, but at least he is cast in almost every game. If no club decides to sign him by the end of the year, in January he will be back at Palmeiras.

EMERSON SANTOS (26 years old, Kashiwa Reysol-JAP): Despite having been hired by Palmeiras in 2018, it was only after the arrival of Abel Ferreira that the defender really started to be used frequently. Emerson Santos went to the field in five of the team’s seven games in the final stretch of the Libertadores and watched the victory against Santos from the bench. After the continental tournament, he lost space again and was traded in March with Kashiwa Reysol. But things aren’t looking so good for the defender in Japan. Emerson has only played ten games this season and came to live with the threat of relegation in the J-League.

LUCAS ESTEVES (21 years old, Colorado Rapids-USA): Born from the Palmeira base, he was not as important in the title campaign as Danilo, Patrick de Paula and Gabriel Menino. The left-back participated in just six minutes of the Libertadores-2020. This season, he was used in his debut (against Universitario) and then never left the bench. In June, he received an offer from the United States and was on loan for the MLS (Major League Soccer). In Colorado Rapids, he alternated between the lines of defenders and midfielders, but was almost always in the starting lineup. His team made it through the regular season but was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

BRUNO HENRIQUE (32 years old, Al Ittihad-ARA): One of the most important names at Palmeiras in the second half of the past decade, the midfielder started the Libertadores-2020 as a starter and played the entire group stage before being negotiated with Al-Ittihad, in October of last year. After a decent first season in Saudi Arabia, the Brazilian has had trouble adapting to Romanian coach Cosmin Contra’s game and has been on the bench in most recent matches. Bruno Henrique is one of those names that will possibly be back in Brazil in a short time.
