United Kingdom: man to receive first 3D printed ocular prosthesis – 11/25/2021

A patient at the Moorfields Eye ophthalmology hospital in London will be the first man in the world to receive an eye created on a 3D printer. Doctors believe the prosthesis will look more realistic than the traditional acrylic eye.

“I’ve needed an eye prosthesis since I was 20 and I’ve always felt insecure about it,” Steve Varze, now 40, told the BBC.

This innovation will not only allow for more realistic prostheses, but it will also reduce in half the time for patients to adapt to the prostheses, from six to three weeks.

“When I leave the house, I usually look in the mirror and I never like what I see,” lamented Varze. “These new eyes look fantastic and, being created with 3D printing technology, they’ll just keep getting better.”

The traditional technique for making eye prostheses involves the patient undergoing a two-hour session during which an eye cavity mold is made. After that, the fabrication of the prosthesis takes three weeks. At the end of the process, the fake eye is fitted and painted to resemble a real eye.

The 3D technology should allow the prosthesis to be manufactured more quickly, in about two weeks, and the initial consultation to carry out the mold could take just half an hour, according to Moorfields Eye hospital.

“We hope the clinical trial will provide us with robust evidence of the value of this technology, demonstrating how it can make a difference for patients,” Professor Mandeep Sagoo, an ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye, told the BBC.

For the expert, the new technique has, “clearly, the potential to reduce waiting lists”.

The use of 3D printers in an attempt to build prostheses for parts of the human body is not new. Earlier this year, scientists at Swansea University in Wales sought to three-dimensionally print a human cartilage replacement to give a ten-year-old girl an ear prosthesis.
