After all the controversy surrounding the lesbian kiss, which resulted in the film being banned in 14 countries, lightyear had a disappointing opening at the box office. The Pixar animation grossed $51 million in North American theaters and $85 million in total.
Fundraising is especially problematic, as the film cost $200 million to produce, as well as more than tens of millions in advertising. Another frustration is that Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 grossed over US$ 100 million (R$ 510 million) and set a record in the opening weekend.
Before the weekend, the film was expected to generate at least $70 million, but its ambitions were thwarted by fierce competition from Jurassic World: Dominionfrom Universal, and Top Gun: Maverickby Paramount, which continues to be well attended in its fourth week of airing.
lightyear is Pixar’s first film on the big screen in over two years, since Two Brothers: A Fantastic Journey, in March 2020. During the pandemic, three Pixar movies skipped theaters and went directly to Disney+. They were: soul, luca and Red: Growing Up Is a Beast.
THE BIGGEST COLLECTION OF THE WEEK
Jurassic World: Dominion managed to win the box office again. Universal’s prehistoric sequel generated $58.6 million in its second weekend, taking a total of $259 million at the domestic box office. The second place went to Lightyear.
In third place, Top Gun: Maverick continues to fly high, with US$ 44 million (R$ 224.4 million) in North America. These box office returns, down 15% from the previous one, are especially significant given that the film has been in theaters for a month.
