The Carlos Drummond de Andrade Cultural Foundation (FCCDA) announced, this Sunday (19/6), the cancellation of the show by Johnny Hooker, which would perform at the 48th edition of the Itabira Winter Festival. According to the statement, the decision was made in agreement with the artist’s production.

The presentation would take place on July 9. In a note, Itabira City Hall says that the cancellation was motivated by a problem in the singer’s schedule, who had to extend the tour he is currently doing in Europe.

“At first, Johnny Hooker would perform in Itabira on the 9th of July. After being informed by the production that the singer would return from Europe on the 16th, the FCCDA suggested rescheduling the presentation on the 17th, the closing date of the Festival. The understanding, however, was that it would be unfeasible for the artist to fulfill the schedule in Itabira”, states the note.

On social media, Hooker stated that he is touring Europe and that new commitments have emerged on the continent. “I will have to extend my stay here, so unfortunately I had to cancel my show at the Itabira Winter Festival.” He pointed out that the festival’s production tried to reconcile the schedules, but that was not possible.

The city hall also points out that there was no burden for any of the parties, since the contract had not been signed. Finally, the FDCCA claims to respect the work of Johnny Hooker and is also “always in favor of different cultural manifestations, repudiates all prejudiced statements and understands that the Winter Festival must necessarily be plural and comprehensive”.

Hooker’s concert in the city of Minas Gerais was criticized by some Itabiranos and even by a petition asking for the cancellation of the performance. As justification, the popular petition claimed that “the hiring of ‘artist Johnny Hooker’ with public funds violates all the principles of the Itabinarana Christian family”.

Elsewhere, the manifesto said that “this is not the kind of culture we want for our children and young people”.

Johnny Hooker is a queer artist, with pro-LGBT songs and androgynous looks. In the post announcing the cancellation, fans of the singer expressed indignation: “Cultural throwback. What a disappointment!”, commented one of the followers.
