Since 2021, actor Luciano Szafir has been fighting the consequences of covid-19, a disease that almost took his life last year. In an exclusive interview with the newspaper O Globo, he told how it was to go through three hospitalizations, delicate surgeries, to be “face to face with death”, as he defined it, and the lessons he learned from it.

“Sometimes I was face to face with death. The worst happened during the first hospitalization. After the operation, I was in the ICU, it was two in the morning, I took my medicine, said good night to everyone and slept. I opened my eyes, there were about four doctors around me. I woke up with an absurd chest pain”, recalls the actor, whose heartbeat reached 2020 (normal is 70) before completely ceasing.

“I heard that continuous sound of the machine, the same one we hear in the movies when the character dies. I just thought that at any moment the lights would go out. I was fully conscious, I almost broke the doctor’s hand from squeezing it so hard. It was the worst ten seconds of my life. And out of nowhere the machine started counting the beats again, until it stopped at 80. My heart was turned off. It’s a feeling of jumping off the cliff without a parachute”, he defines.

“I ended up getting a very big trauma from the hospital and hospitalization. All the time, since I entered the hospital, I was afraid of dying. Every ten minutes, I didn’t know if I would survive another ten”, he adds.

Luciano’s last hospitalization was last weekend with intestinal subocclusion. Because of complications from covid, the actor underwent the introduction of a colostomy bag after a bowel loop was perforated. He has since been discharged and is doing well, according to the newspaper.

Always healthy, as he pointed out, the actor almost never set foot in a hospital, a routine that has completely changed since last year. Szafir faced several difficulties, such as having to swallow a probe the size of a milkshake straw. “I spent a week with this tube, without eating properly, without sleeping, it was desperate. And this needed to be done to deflate the handles and make the organ work normally again. It was painful, hard and very difficult”, he told the doctor. The globe.

“Going through everything I went through, if someone told me, I would laugh. It’s horrible that you can’t breathe, can’t eat, keep feeding through a tube”, added the actor, who says he “lived the horror” because of illness.

Currently recovering at his home in the interior of São Paulo, with his family, Luciano Szafir maintains a diet of vegetable soup, eventually being able to eat small portions of fish and chicken. “I unfortunately still can’t eat lasagna, I’d like to,” he jokes.

Until then, the actor already sets goals for a new life in which his family and his health will be irrevocable priorities. “I will continue to get up early, say my prayers, meditate, and plan on taking my kids to school every day. After that I will take care of my health, whether through physical therapy, gymnastics, weight training. Work meetings or recordings will only be from 11 am, and I will definitely stop at 7 pm. I’ll be 54 years old, I’ve worked a lot, I have the right to organize my life to participate more actively with my family. I’ve always been very present, but now I’m going to put a start time and an end time on the work. Of course there will be exceptions, but overall I will have this cycle,” he says.

“I learned that life is too short. I’m talking to you now, but I might not be on this plane in two hours. So I want to make the most of it with the people I love, say ‘no’ without fear of worrying about what people will think about me. I think that was the big change that happened to me: I stopped caring more about others and started caring more about my family and myself.”
