Newborn suffers burns after foot test

The baby’s grandmother, Scheila Vanessa, said he was calm for the first two days of life. However, after the exam, he couldn’t stop crying. Upon arriving home, Scheila noticed that the newborn’s foot had burns and blisters. The family returned to the hospital and the child was referred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

“It hurts the soul, we weren’t supposed to be going through this. It was a happy time. It’s a real nightmare,” said the grandmother.

Rodrigo reports that he registered, this Monday (20/6), the case at the Center for the Protection of Children and Adolescents Victims of Crime (Nucria).

The Secretary of State for Health (Sesa), responsible for the administration of the Hospital do Trabalhador, said that the unit is checking the case. The Civil Police reported that it is investigating the case, but, as it is a case of bodily injury, there is no police investigation.

The foot test, which consists of puncturing and squeezing the baby’s foot to ensure blood flow, is responsible for evaluating 40 diseases. It is always done on the sides of the heel because there are a lot of blood vessels in the place, and consequently, greater blood circulation. The child, however, should not feel pain.
