Amid the political turmoil that affects the largest Brazilian company, Petrobras announced, this Monday (20/6), the payment of the 1st installment of the distribution of R$ 24.25 billion in remuneration to shareholders. Of this total, the Union will receive R$ 8.85 billion.

The Board of Directors approved the transfer in May, but the announcement to the market was made on Monday. “The gross amount distributed today corresponds to dividends and interest on equity (JCP) of R$ 1.857745 per outstanding common and preferred share, based on the shareholding position on May 23, 2022”, he informed.

The second installment of the remuneration will be paid on July 20. Also in May this year, the company reported a net profit of R$44.561 billion to the market in the first quarter of 2022, the highest in history.

The federal government holds 36.6% of the company’s total capital and is Petrobras’ largest shareholder. The high profitability and high prices triggered a political crisis around the state-owned company and led President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to pressure the company for changes in the company’s direction, which culminated in the resignation of the now ex-president José Mauro Ferreira Coelho.

According to researcher Eduardo Costa Pinto, from the Instituto de Estudos Estratégicos de Petróleo (Ineep), the profit is due to the state-owned company’s current policy for maximum prices, a result of the combination of the PPI and the short-term vision of the company’s management in management. Bolsonaro, not from the market, as reported.

According to Eduardo Costa Pinto, if Petrobras practiced 20% lower prices in 2021, profit would fall from the BRL 106.5 billion obtained last year, to BRL 46.8 billion, maintaining the high profitability of shareholders.
