Manaus/AM – With the rainy season in the Amazon, the municipal health departments have registered an increase in cases of water-borne diseases. The disease that has the most notification is Acute Diarrheal Disease (ADD).
ADD corresponds to a group of gastrointestinal infectious diseases that, depending on the causative agent of the disease and the individual characteristics of the patients, can clinically progress to dehydration that range from mild to severe. They are characterized by the occurrence of at least three episodes of acute diarrhea in 24 hours.
In Amazonas, ADD monitoring is carried out by the Amazonas Health Surveillance Foundation – Dr. Rosemary Costa Pinto (FVS-RCP), an institution linked to the institution linked to the Amazonas State Department of Health (SES-AM). From January to June this year alone, 1.6 million bottles of sodium hypochlorite for water treatment for human consumption have been released to municipalities.
In 2022 alone, from January to May, 81,190 cases were recorded. Of this total of cases, 42% (34,492) correspond to notifications made by the Health Surveillance of Manaus. In 2021, also from January to May, 52,350 cases of ADD were recorded in Amazonas. In the entire year of 2021, there were 169,456 notifications in the state.
Among the diseases transmitted during the flood season in the Amazon is leptospirosis, which occurs from direct or indirect exposure to the urine of animals (mainly rats). From January to March this year, 34 cases were reported, seven of which were confirmed in Amazonas.
Another disease that occurs during floods is hepatitis A, which is transmitted through the ingestion of contaminated water and food. There were 262 confirmed cases in Amazonas, from January to May this year, 144 of which in Manaus, the state capital.
