Bia wins 50th in the WTA and makes quarters at Eastbourne

Eastbourne (England) – The great sequence of Beatriz Haddad Maia, who still doesn’t know what it’s like to lose in 2022 on grass, is still alive. This Wednesday, the number 1 in Brazil put another victory in the account, now for the third round of the WTA 500 in Eastbourne, beating the guest of the house Jodie Anna Burrage by 2 sets to 0, with partials of 6/1 and 6/ two.

In addition to claiming her 50th career win in the WTA Majors, counting 250 and more tournaments, Bia reaches her 12th consecutive win and 21st at this level this season. Considering all tournament levels, including qualifiers, WTA 125 and the Billie Jean King Cup, she already has 38 wins this year.

Champion in Nottingham and Birmingham, the left-hander from São Paulo will now face the Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko in Eastbourne, who narrowly missed the turn of Polish Magda Linette, getting to be a break behind in the third set, before closing the game with the score end of 7/5, 3/6 and 7/5.

Another great performance
Bia dominated the opening set against the 23-year-old British rival and currently 169 in the world, who in the previous round had surprised the Spaniard Paula Badosa, seed number 1. In the first two games the servers prevailed, but after that only the Brazilian , who scored two consecutive breaks and won all the games until closing the partial and making it 1 to 0.

After winning the last five games of the first set, Bia kept the momentum going and also took the first two games of the second, already leading the victory over Burrage. She extended the lead with another break in the seventh and then confirmed the serve to seal a spot in the quarterfinals, closing the game in the first match-point she had.

“This is one of the best grass courts I’ve ever played,” said Bia on the court, saying that she doesn’t think about the unbeaten streak she’s having at the moment and that she’s just worried about playing well. She finished the game with 76% points when she hit the first serve, including five aces. She made a total of 19 winners against 9 of the opponent and also led in unforced errors, by 11 to 18.
