Ethanol price drops, but it is only advantageous in 4 states; see how to calculate | Economy

The average value of ethanol dropped from R$5,002 to R$4,910, a drop of 1.84%, but it is still only advantageous to use it to supply fuel instead of gasoline in four Brazilian states: Goiás, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais and São Paulo.

In the other states, however, it is worth supplying with Gasoline.

The ANP survey was carried out between June 12th and 18th and still does not fully reflect the latest adjustment announced by Petrobras in its refineries. Prices were collected at more than 5,000 gas stations in Brazil.

The ANP data, compiled by the g1, show that it is in Goiás that ethanol has the most advantage: there, the price of a liter of ethanol is equivalent to 65.74% of the value of a liter of gasoline. In general, ethanol is worth it when this ratio is less than 70%. In the other three states, it is closer to that limit.

The advantage of ethanol is calculated considering that the biofuel has, on average, 70% of the calorific value of gasoline. So, to find out if the ethanol is more advantageous or not, just multiply the value of the liter of Gasoline by 0.7. If the resulting value is less than a liter of ethanol, it is better to fill up with gasoline. If it is larger, ethanol is the best option.

In other words, if the price of ethanol is less than 70% of the price of gasoline, the former is more worthwhile. If it is larger, gasoline should be chosen. (see at the end of the article more explanations on how to make the account).

It is important to remember, however, that this relationship varies a lot between stations and between cities and between gas stations – therefore, it is necessary to research.

Between June 12 and 18, the average price of a liter of gasoline was R$ 7,232 in the country, according to the ANP survey. The price of a liter of ethanol, on the other hand, was R$ 4.910, and for diesel, R$ 6.906 – an increase of 0.29%.

How to know if ethanol is cheaper than gasoline in the car

How to know if ethanol is cheaper than gasoline in the car

At the pump, to find out which fuel is more worthwhile, the driver must multiply the value of a liter of gasoline by 0.7. If the resulting value is less than a liter of ethanol, it is better to fill up with gasoline. If it is larger, ethanol is the best option.

  • Multiply the value of the liter Gasoline by 0.7
  • If the result is lessr than the value of a liter of ethanol: gasoline is the best option
  • If the result is larger than the value of a liter of ethanol: ethanol is more advantageous
  • Gasoline x 0.7
  • If result < ethanol, then choose gasoline
  • If result > ethanol, choose ethanol
