Columnist Leo Dias, from the website Metrópoles, was sentenced to prison by the Justice of Rio de Janeiro. The penalty is one year, three months and 23 days of detention, replaced by the same period of services provided to the community or public entities and the payment of a 67-day fine, arbitrated at half the minimum wage at the time (approximately R$ 40 thousand ). The conviction came after a lawsuit that was brought by presenter Tiago Leifert and his father, Gilberto Leifert, who were unhappy with a publication by Leo.
In 2020, the columnist published a text that generated great controversy. The article was titled “CONAR’s strong man, who attacked Gusttavo Lima, is the father of Tiago Leifert”. Lawyers for Tiago started a lawsuit and claimed that the matter was “sensationalist” and “liar”.
The journalist was accused of drawing conclusions and insinuating that Gilberto Leifert had influenced the opening of an investigation against the singer. At the time the article was released, Tiago Leifert spoke out and criticized the content. In October 2021, the journalist even retracted on social media and apologized.
The decision on the conviction was taken by Judge Flávio Itabaiana, who stated that Tiago’s father never had any relationship with Gusttavo: In the decision, Judge Flávio Itabaiana agreed with the Leifert family. In the action, the defense alleges that there was an exaggeration. “The content of the article conveys to readers the false impression that Gilberto would be willing to use the respect and prestige gained over decades of work, to reach the singer Gusttavo Lima, a person he has never been with and who he has nothing against. ”, says the document.
