Minecraft Is So Big That Even Its Mods Get More Downloads Than Most AAA Video Games

Minecraft is one of the biggest and most successful video games of all time. It has sold literally hundreds of millions of copies across all platforms and enjoys a vibrant community of passionate gamers who continue to create new experiences within it.

The recent Monday, one such mod for Mojang Studios and Xbox Game Studios’ game The Betweenlands announced a major milestone: According to a report published on the Windows Central website, surpassed 20 million downloads.

The Betweenlands is a mod for Minecraft: Java Edition, which adds a whole new dimension to the game filled with new mobs, biomes, blocks and items, mechanics and events and much more. It was conceptualized in 2012 and finally released in 2016 and has since amassed a massive following.

The success of The Betweenlands

The Betweenlands is an incredibly large and ambitious mod for the legacy Windows PC version of Minecraft and it has been rewarded with immense success. With over 20 million downloads to its credit, it’s not unreasonable to suggest that The Betweenlands is bigger than some AAA video game releases.

Minecraft itself had sold more than 238 million copies as of April 2021, but that number has almost certainly grown since then.

Surely, with so many downloads, The Betweenlands should be the biggest Minecraft mod of all time, but on the Curse Forge portal there are literally dozens of Minecraft mods that have racked up far more downloads.

The biggest one is Just Enough Items and it has nearly 220 million downloads alone.. In the grand scheme of things, The Betweenlands isn’t even on the list. Granted, few of these mods are as big as The Betweenlands, but it still highlights just how vast the Minecraft modding scene is.
