From David Fincher to “Barbie”, Caio Pimenta presents the first candidates towards the Oscar 2024.
“Next Goal Wins” to “Freud’s Last Session”
Winners of previous award seasons could return to compete for the Oscars in 2024.
Winner of Best Original Screenplay for “Jojo Rabbit”, Taika Waititi finally should release “Next Goal Wins”. The production shows the strange methods of the American Samoa coach to take the country to the 2014 World Cup. Michael Fassbender and Elisabeth Moss are in the cast of the comedy.
Emerald Fennell, winner of Original Screenplay with “beautiful revenge”, will arrive with “Saltburn”. The suspense has not yet had many details revealed, but it is known that the cast has Barry Keoghan, Carey Mulligan and Rosamund Pike.
“Freud’s Last Session” could be a serious contender in the traditional vein of British drama. The story is quite interesting: the encounter between a neurologist at the end of his life and the writer CS Lewis, known for creating “The Chronicles of Narnia”, in a debate about the existence of God. Everything happens on the eve of the Second World War. O Anthony Hopkins plays Freud and Matthew Goode plays the writer in the film directed by Matt Brown.
“FLINT STRONG” A “THE PIANO LESSON”
After becoming the first woman nominated for Best Cinematography for “mudbound“, Rachel Morrison makes her directorial debut with “Flint Strong”. The sports drama looks like an Oscar recalling “Rocky”; the production shows the real story of a boxer from the poor region of Flint who becomes the first black woman to win the US gold medal in the sport. The screenplay is in the hands of Barry Jenkins, winner of “Moonlight”, and the cast brings the newly appointed Brian Tyree Henry. A strong enough team to come with chances.
Known for “Ex-Machina”, Alex Garland seeks to reach the Oscars for the first time with science fiction “Civil War”. The A24 production features Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura as protagonists. The Brazilian, by the way, was placed by Variety as a strong name in supporting actor.
Director of the last films of the series “Harry Potter”, David Yates seeks to disentangle himself from the magical universe with “Pain Hustlers”. The Netflix project starring Emily Blunt and Chris Evans shows a woman growing up with her daughter by saving a bankrupt pharmacy amid a criminal conspiracy.
The Washington family will be chasing the Oscars with Denzel’s youngest son. Malcolm will adapt “The Piano Leeson”, award-winning work by August Wilson. The playwright, by the way, has already been taken to the screens with his father in “A Boundary Between Us” and, two years ago, with “The Supreme Voice of the Blues”. The story shows a guy who wants to sell an old piano to buy land where his family worked as slaves decades before.
“POOR THINGS” A “BARBIE”
Three big names in world cinema will try to win the first Oscars in 2024.
After “A Favorita”, Yorgos Lanthimos arrives with “Poor Things”. The Greek re-teams with Emma Stone and screenwriter Tony McNamara with a story of a woman brought back to life thanks to a brilliant scientist. That was in the Victorian era.
David Fincher, on the other hand, looks less ambitious this season after failures to win Best Picture with “Benjamin Button” and “Mank”. He will return to suspense with “The Killer” in which Michael Fassbender is a hitman on an international manhunt.
and still have Michael Mann: director of successes such as “Fogo Contra Fogo” and “O Informante”, he arrives with “Ferrari”, the project of his dreams in which he will recount the drama of the family that gives its name to the car brand at a decisive moment. Adam Driver leads the cast that still brings Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley and Brazilian Gabriel Leone.
And, finally, we have one of the most anticipated cinema productions in 2023.
“Barbie” brings together Greta Gerwig in the direction, Noah Baumbach in the script, in addition to Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the protagonists. From the first images, it has everything to collect nominations in the technical categories, especially, costumes and production design. If it is well-received by the public and critics, it can repeat the feat of “Top Gun” It is “Avatar” this year and win Best Picture.
Of all those mentioned, I put my chips on “Barbie”, “Poor Things” and “Ferrari” as candidates to go far in the season, while “Freud’s Last Session” tends to be a surprise.
