The USWNT take on Portugal with plenty at stake in the group stage final

The US Women’s National Team meets Portugal at 3 a.m. ET on Tuesday with plenty on the line in their Women’s World Cup final.

Team USA enters the match with the edge in Group E. It is tied with the Netherlands on top with four points and has a 3-1 edge over the Dutch in goal difference, the first tiebreaker. But it does not have complete control over the result in the group stage.

A win or draw against Portugal would secure the USA’s spot in the knockout round of 16. An upset loss would put their World Cup in jeopardy, opening the door for the Netherlands and Portugal to advance. It is not expected. At BetMGM, the USWNT was one -350 betting favorite to win from Monday evening.

The more likely prize at stake is first place in Group E, which would provide an easier path through the knockout round as the USWNT seeks a third consecutive World Cup victory. After a 1-1 draw with Holland on Wednesday, Holland are very much alive to claim top spot.

While the U.S. has the goal difference, the Netherlands play a Vietnam team that the U.S. beat, 3-0, and Portugal beat, 2-0. The Netherlands will have ample opportunity to make up the tiebreaker column in a match that takes place at the same time as USA-Portugal (3 p.m. ET). The next tiebreaker is total goals scored, with the USA entering the final round with a 4-2 edge over the Netherlands.

Team USA must remain aggressive against Portugal to secure its place in the knockout round and its best shot at a favorable tie. History favors the USWNT, which is 10-0 against Portugal with a total score of 39-0. The USA won the most recent meeting, 1-0 in a 2021 game in Houston.
