A growing list of current and former Iowa State student-athletes have been charged in connection with an investigation into illegal sports betting. This list will be updated if more charges are filed. Two such bets were on games in which Uwazurike appeared – Iowa at Iowa State and Kansas at Iowa State, both in 2021. Uwazurike, who was drafted by the Denver Broncos, also bet on NFL games that he played in. About 12 of those bets were placed on Iowa State football games, including 2022 games against Ohio, West Virginia, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. Paniro Johnson, Iowa State wrestling: Johnson is accused of placing 1,283 online bets, approximately 25 of which were on Iowa State sporting events. Johnson is not yet 21. Johnson was Iowa State’s top wrestler at 149 pounds and a 2023 Big 12 champion. Aaron Blom, Iowa football: Blom is accused of placing 170 bets while a minor totaling more than $4,400. Eight of those bets were on Iowa sporting events. Ahron Ulis, former Iowa basketball: Ulis is accused of placing approximately 1,850 online bets, over 740 of which were placed before he turned 21. The alleged total wagered was over $34,800 with “at least one” bet placed on an Iowa sporting event. Ulis announced his decision to transfer from Iowa to Nebraska in May. All Iowa student-athletes, Iowa State charged in sports gambling investigation

ISU Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard released the following statement on August 2: “Iowa State cannot comment on any student-athlete’s circumstances or eligibility status. However, we will continue to support our student-athletes as our compliance staff works with the NCAA to resolve issues surrounding their future eligibility for intercollegiate athletic competition.”

Enyi Uwazurike, former football at Iowa State: Uwazurike is accused of placing approximately 801 online bets, four of which were on Iowa State football games. Two such bets were in play where Uwazurike appeared – Iowa at Iowa State and Kansas at Iowa State, both in 2021. Uwazurike, who was drafted by the Denver Broncos, also placed bets on NFL games where he played.
