Environmental education with Minecraft? The innovative idea of ​​Envigado, Antioquia

The Mayor of Envigado, Antioquia decided to implement a digital strategy to promote environmental education through Minecraft, one of the most famous video games in the world. With this they seek that children, through play, become aware of the environment.

For those who don’t know him, Minecraft focuses on the placement of blocks, simulating lego games in a virtual way; cubes or blocks that represent different elements of nature, such as earth, stones, minerals and logs, among others. Envigado seeks to adapt the game and contribute to the construction of sustainable cities.

This novel educational strategy arrived at the municipality through the Mayor’s Office of Envigadothrough the Ministry of Environment and Agricultural Development with the support of Interlace, which associates 11 countries in Europe and Latin America.

Minecraft arrives in Envigado with an educational commitment

The first pilot tests were carried out where More than 150 boys and girls from educational institutions participated, in the company of the Ministry of Education and OPPLAin order to evaluate its reception, involving multiple actors between parents and teachers, who received the initiative as a tool to visualize the environment that the children of Envigado dream of and want.

During the visits, educational institutions were also introduced the development of nature-based solutions that are currently applied in the municipality and which are part of the video game, such as green walls, functional gardens and tree planting.

“The idea is to replicate the efforts made for the planning of the territory in a sustainable way, in addition to visualizing three square kilometers of Envigado where the Santa Gertrudis La Magna church is recreated, as it is seen in the Main Park,” the municipality quotes in a Press release.

The Municipal Administration also thanked the Interlace group, the Alexander Von Humboldt Institute, OPPLA (virtual platform for the implementation of nature-based solutions of the European Union) and WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) for support environmental education with innovative tools that lead to interaction and active participation of the boys and girls of the Stately City.
