Dive into Epic’s announcements at GDC 2023

We love being back at GDC! Seeing the tremendous work being done by the game development community is an incredibly moving and inspiring experience, so we can’t wait to see what this year has in store for us.

If you missed the State of Unreal stream, we revealed Epic’s long-term vision for the future of content creation, distribution, and monetization. Among other things, we’re showing how we’re laying the foundation for an open, connected ecosystem and economy that will allow all creators and developers to benefit from the metaverse.

Unreal Editor for Fortnite, now in public beta

Since 2018, thanks to the Fortnite Creative Mode toolset, you can create your own Fortnite island. Today, there are more than a million of these islands and more than 40% of the game time in Fortnite happens on them.

What if creators and developers had more powerful tools and creative flexibility at their fingertips to reach more than 500 million Fortnite accounts? This will be possible with Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN)which we’re launching in public beta today in State of Unreal.

In fact, UEFN offers the opportunity to use Verse for the first time, the new programming language. Verse is being designed as a new programming language for the metaverse, with future features that will allow content to scale into gigantic open worlds developed by millions of creators for billions of players.

Creator Economy 2.0

UEFN is launching alongside Creator Economy and specifically Pay Per Interaction, a new way for Fortnite island creators to receive money based on how much players interact with the content they post.

Pay-per-Interaction proportionally distributes 40% of net revenue from the Fortnite Item Shop and most Fortnite real money purchases to creators of eligible islands and experiences, whether artist-created islands independent or Epic’s own islands, such as Battle Royale.

You will find all the information about UEFN, Verse and Economy of the creators 2.0 in our blog.

We build a unified 3D content marketplace: Fab

It allows small teams to produce games faster and on a smaller budget, while funding the growth of independent content creators who distribute their work through these virtual marketplaces.

We believe this trend will continue to grow significantly as experience creators for Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, and other 3D worlds begin to view these marketplaces as sources of content for the metaverse, and as players increasingly develop and customize. their own 3D spaces online.

Throughout this year, we will unite our markets (the Unreal Engine Marketplace, sketchfab, Quixel Bridge and the ArtStation Marketplace) to launch Fab: a unified marketplace where creators can find, publish and share digital assets and use them to design digital experiences. Do you want access to a preview version? You can try the alpha version of Fab as a plugin for UEFN today.

A look at what’s new in Unreal Engine 5.2

Unreal Engine is the backbone of Epic’s ecosystem. The launch of EU5 last spring it put even more creative power in the hands of developers. Since that release, 77% of users have moved to Unreal Engine 5. Unreal Engine 5.2 offers more improvements and optimizations, as well as new features.

In the State of Unreal live demo, a photorealistic electric pickup truck Rivian R1T advance through an environment full of trees and exuberant vegetation created with Quixel Megascansas well as towering and rugged rock structures designed with Quixel MegaAssemblies.

MetaHuman Animator: High Fidelity Motion Capture

Photorealistic digital humans demand high-quality animation in order to deliver believable performances, but the knowledge and time required to create them has until now made it a very difficult task, even for the most skilled creators.

All this will change this summer with the launch of Meta Human Animator, a new feature pack for the MetaHuman environment. MetaHuman Animator will allow you to reproduce any facial movement as high-fidelity animation on digital human characters.

A bright future for developers and creators

On the State of Unreal stream, we saw amazing demos from Epic partners like Cubit, Kabam, CI Games, and NCSoft, showing off what’s currently possible with Unreal Engine 5 and other Epic tools. Projects as incredible as these show that we are at the beginning of a new era of video games, experiences and virtual worlds.

The opportunities for creators are limitless thanks to incredibly powerful tools, a massive marketplace packed with digital content, direct access to a global audience, and a new equitable economy.
