In the film, in a windswept fishing village, a mother is torn between protecting her beloved son and her own sense of right and wrong. A lie she tells him shatters her family and the unity of her community.
Mescal was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in 2023 for his work in the award-winning “Aftersun”, but first came to attention in the series “Normal People”. In LORD’S CREATURES, he plays Brian O’Hara, a charismatic boy, but full of contradictions, quiet, but menacing – a character that the actor defines as full of layers. He returns to his native Ireland with many wounds and is unable to articulate what is happening to him.
“At first, Bryan wants to work on the family’s oyster farm and that’s very romantic for him. But all the unresolved issues, the issues from the past, prevent him from really integrating into that world.”explains the actor.
Watson plays Aileen O’Hara, Brian’s mother, who also works in the family business. “For me, this is a story about silent cycles of violence that pass from one generation to the next and stifle emotions. The grandfather who was violent with his son, the father who did the same thing to his boy. But nobody talks about it, nobody questions it.”
Mescal, on the other hand, says that the character is very different from him and has questionable actions, but, even so, he sought what could be more human in Brian. “It’s the scariest part: finding nuances in someone who acts like him. For me, Brian thinks his life isn’t working out the way it should, which brings a sense of being able to do whatever you want, even if it’s dangerous.”
Watson, who has already been nominated for an Oscar twice (for “The Waves” and “Hilary and Jackie”), says that she was impressed with the presence of Mescal in the scene. “His choice for the role was brilliant, because nothing about Paul indicates that he is a dark and difficult person. He surprises people.”
At the British Independent Film Awards, LORD’S CREATURES it competed in five categories, including Best Leading Role (Watson) and Best Supporting Role (Mescal). The film was also very well received by specialized critics, currently boasting a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Formally, the film gives the cast a chance to shine”writes Guy Lodge in Variety magazine. “The entire cast is excellent, but the performances of Watson and Mescal elevate the film beyond familiarity”says Gregory Ellwood, at The Playlist.
