Players gather to say goodbye to Spellbreak

The fans of spellbreak recently got together to say goodbye to the game when its servers were shut down. Spellbreak was a fantasy battle royale in which players fired spells instead of bullets.

Now, after only a few years of life, the game is gone forever. Released in 2020, Spellbreak was met with positive reviews, as its magical twist on the formula allowed for a fair amount of experimentation by players.

Spellbreak allowed players to combine magic with deadly effects, and that, along with its solid execution of battle royale mechanics, helped make the game stand out. Unfortunately, last June, the developer Proletariat announced the closure of the game.

Despite critical acclaim and inventive gameplay, Spellbreak had a fairly low player count, and while it wasn’t stated at the time of the announcement, this was probably the main factor behind the decision.

Right after the announcement, reports surfaced that Blizzard was going to acquire Proletariat. Now, several months into the deal, Spellbreak has brought the curtain down. To celebrate and mourn the final moments of the game, Twitch streamer IXITimmyIXI gathered a group of subscribers and fellow streamers to play a few peaceful matches.

During the last hour of the game’s life, players danced, chatted, and cast spells without malice, all in the spirit of a fond farewell. IXITimmyIXI also shared a short video of the final moments of the last game, when “Spellstorm”, Spellbreak’s version of Fortnite’s “Toxic Storm”, approaches the players.
