Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse producer Amy Pascal shared new details about the sequel’s plot in an interview with Empire Magazine. Revealing his concerns about making bigger things for the sequel just for the sake of it, Pascal noted that the Into the Spider-Verse sequel is a love story highlighting Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy’s relationship. The article also included a new image from the movie featuring Miles and Gwen, with Gwen hanging upside down as Miles looks on in puzzlement.
“The danger of a sequel is only rising for the sake of rising. But all the bells and whistles are no good unless you care. This movie is a love story between Miles and Gwen.”
This will also throw a little jealousy into the mix, thanks to Daniel Kaluuya’s new variant of Spider-Man, Hobie Brown, better known as Spider-Punk. According to co-director Kemp Powers, when Miles sees Gwen wearing ‘Converse Chuck Taylors’ instead of her regular flats, the main hero is concerned about how close she is to this newcomer:
“There’s jealousy there. When Miles meets Gwen again, she’s not wearing her ballet slippers; she’s wearing ‘Converse Chuck Taylors,’ which Spider-Punk gave her. Miles starts to wonder, ‘How close are these two? ?'”
Writer/producer Christopher Miller compared what they’re doing in this film to what was done in the 2022 hit, “Everything and Everywhere at Once,” which just won seven Oscars at the 2023 Oscars, including Best Picture. . Mentioning directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, he explained that this new film has to be “focused on an emotional journey” that is felt throughout, playing with the idea of a crossover event Racacoonie (from the Oscar-winning film) and King of Crime also:
“With our films, it’s similar to what the Daniels did in ‘Everything and Everywhere at Once.’ You can have all the spectacle and action and visual insanity, but it should be focused on an emotional journey that you feel in your heart.” ‘Every Spider-Man Everywhere At Once’? Bring on the Racacoonie-Kingpin crossover.”
The Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse cast includes returning stars Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, Bryan Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez and Greta Lee. Oscar Isaac will reprise his role in the first film’s post-credits scene as Spider-Man 2099. Joining the series for the first time are Issa Rae, Rachel Dratch, Joma Taccone, Shea Whigham, Daniel Kaluuya, Karan Soni and Jason Schwartzman .
