The debate on Taurus is open for Ukraine – DW – 03/06/2024

It appears that the wiretapping scandal has hardly changed the various political positions on Taurus missiles, but rather strengthened them.

In any case, the German Chancellor made a fool of himself. After all, he justified his refusal to supply cruise missiles to Ukraine by saying that only German troops could engage targets with that sophisticated weapon.

However, in the recording of the conversation, Air Force Chief of Staff Ingo Gerharts and three other officers claim that Ukrainian soldiers can also handle the missiles after several months of training.

Even members of the coalition government of Social Democrats (SPD), Greens and Liberals (FDP) do not bother to hide the obvious contradiction.

For example, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, an expert in the defense of liberals, assured German public television ZDF That the intercepted conversations “effectively destroyed the Chancellor’s reasoning for refusing to hand over Ukraine.”

Now more than ever or now under any circumstances

Defense politician Roderich Kiesewetter of the Christian Democratic opposition (CDU) makes no mistake with words. The reasons given by Scholz are “false reasons,” Kiesewetter wrote to DW.

“There are no technical or legal reasons that would be against the delivery of the Taurus. In this sense, the time has come for the Chancellor to finally authorize the delivery after ten months of delay.” Otherwise, Kiesewetter believes, Putin’s story will be followed.

Opposing conclusions are reached at the left and right ends of the partisan spectrum.

Janine Wissler, leader of The Left, announced der spiegel: “In terms of content, the negotiations once again show very clearly that the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles would be extremely dangerous and could lead to an unprecedented escalation of possible attacks on Moscow.”

Does Scholz not trust Ukraine?

Even after the leak, Olaf Scholz sees no reason to step back from his position. “It is unacceptable to provide a weapons system that goes too far and then not think about how that weapon can be controlled,” Scholz said in a debate.

He said, “If you want to have control, and it only works if German troops participate, then for me there is no question about it.” And, as if it were necessary to emphasize this, he insisted: “I am the Chancellor.”

Some speculate that there is something more behind Scholz’s denial. That means distrust in the Kiev government, doubt whether Ukraine will be able to fire missiles at Russian targets or not. Their range is about 500 kilometers, so they can hit targets even in Moscow.

denial does not seem absolute

However, despite everything, Scholz’s denial does not seem so emphatic. At least that’s what Nils Schmidt, a foreign policy expert from the Social Democratic Party, believes: “The technical, constitutional and strategic obstacles are higher than for other weapons systems. But this does not exclude the possibility that the government may in the future consider a will reach different conclusions and decide in favor of surrender,” he told German media.

To be fair, Scholz’s ‘no’ isn’t actually absolute. He said: “If you want control and it only works if German soldiers participate, that has been completely rejected.” This could mean that surrender would be possible if German troops were not involved. Thus Scholz would leave a door open.

Kiesewetter, a defense expert among German conservatives, nevertheless believes that cruise missiles should have been delivered to Ukraine much earlier: “It should be clear that if Putin is not stopped in Ukraine, the risk of war for all of us is massive. But it will increase.” Therefore, the Chancellor’s behavior undermines German and European security. “Appeasement, tolerance and offers of dialogue are viewed by Russia as weakness and encouragement to continue.”
